"Charming Chambers"
More so than not, there is at least one room in a many homes that could double as a
photography dark room. Unfortunately, not everyone can benefit from this shady space and it
often becomes wasted or just a place to stow forgotten items. In order to utilize this room for
activities other than developing film that require natural light, something structural must be
done. This is when a new creative alternative to a window is presented by Rissay as an
option, the Juliet Balcony.

Romantic is not a word that first comes to mind while spending time in the Zietzer’s cellar
storage facility, wait…, we mean guest bedroom. A room so closed off that even candlelight
could be smothered by its darkness and quite possibly may have been the least favored
room in the household before Rissay got its hands on it.
design Challenges
Rissay constructed an intimate extension of the interior room to emulate a piece of
architectural history by placing a Juliet Balcony in the Zietzer’s once humble guest room
jogging visitors’ minds’ of an oh-so-famous speech. Built in bookshelves dressed the walls
to house the works of Mark Twain, Edgar Allan Poe, and less we forget the notorious Virginia
Woolf among many others. New trim work outlined the room, unruly ductwork was sent
packing and plush carpet installed blanketed the room for a crisper, cleaner and more cozy
look and feel. The real cherry topping off the ambience though, was a romantic, miniature
chandelier that cast dancing prisms around the scarlet walls when absorbing an afternoon
sun’s rays.

( Now just one small request: although very tempting, we ask to please resist the urge to
recite Shakespeare to Mrs. Zietzer when seeing her peering out her balcony, for she already
has a Romeo.)
